Diana L. Wheeler ’90 elected law school president

Wayne A. Budd and two others join Board of Trustees

(Boston Revised 11/07/11) New England Law | Boston: The Corporation of New England Law | Boston has elected Trustee Diana L. Wheeler ’90 as its president, replacing outgoing president John Simpson ’64. As president, she heads the legal entity that oversees all school operations.

“Diana is a dedicated and dynamic member of New England Law’s leadership team, and I am delighted that she has been chosen as president of the Corporation,” said Martin C. Foster ’80, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “She brings to the position a thorough understanding of the law school’s goals and needs, along with the skills she has developed in a wide range of professional and volunteer settings.

“I am also pleased to welcome Wayne A. Budd, Peter G. Flaherty II ’92, and C. Brendan Noonan, III ’93 to our Board of Trustees, and I thank them for their service.”

A board member of the New England Law Alumni Association, Wheeler is serving her third term on the Board of Incorporators and has served on the New England Law Board of Trustees for more than 10 years. As a trustee, she is a member of the Development, Endowment, and Tenure and Retention Committees.

Wheeler performs pro bono work for Project ORBIS International, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to blindness prevention in developing countries.  She previously served as corporate counsel at FlightSafety International, Inc., the world’s largest aviation training organization, and at FlightSafety Boeing Training International L.L.C., a joint venture between FlightSafety and The Boeing Company. Prior to that, she was an associate counsel at Block Drug Company, Inc.

Wayne Budd Wayne A. Budd

Budd is a senior counsel in the Litigation Department at Goodwin Procter, LLP, in Boston.  He received two honorary degrees (doctor of laws in 1981 and doctor of public administration in 1989) from New England Law and is a former guest lecturer. His association with the law school spans many years. He has served as a legal advisor to Dean John F. O’Brien ’77, and Budd’s daughter, the Honorable Kimberly S. Budd, a justice on the Massachusetts Superior Court, has been an adjunct faculty member.

In 1992, Budd was appointed associate U.S. attorney general overseeing the Civil Rights, Environmental, Tax, Civil, and Anti-Trust divisions at the Department of Justice, as well as the Bureau of Prisons. From 1989 to 1992, he served as U.S. attorney for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He has also served as a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

Peter Flaherty Peter G. Flaherty II

Flaherty is co-founder of The Shawmut Group, a strategic communications firm in Boston that specializes in strategy consulting for political campaigns, as well as public affairs consulting for companies and associations.  Flaherty’s firm guided the U.S. Senate campaign for Senator Scott Brown, to whom Flaherty currently serves as a senior advisor. He is also a senior advisor to Governor Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. 


Flaherty was a deputy chief of staff and senior advisor on constitutional issues, criminal justice, bioethics, and judicial selection to Romney when he was governor.  He is a former assistant district attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in Boston, where he served for 13 years.  Flaherty’s father, Francis X. Flaherty ’62, is a New England Law alumnus; he is married to Jennifer Mugar Flaherty.

C. Brendan Noonan, III C. Brendan Noonan, III

Noonan, who joined the board last year, is managing director of C. Brendan Noonan & Company, Inc., a Cambridge real estate firm.  He is also of counsel with the Boston law firm Gilman, McLaughlin & Hanrahan, LLP, and has served on the Cambridge Savings Bank Board of Directors since 2006.

From 2007 to 2010, he was an elected member of the Board of Assessors in Belmont, Massachusetts.  He serves on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and is a 1993 class agent.
