Introduction to Real Estate and Land Use Law

Real Estate Law is a broad course of study. For those interested in the transactional side, the basic Property course may be augmented with Modern Real Estate. This valuable course details the basics of a real estate practice, focusing on offers to purchase, contracts for sale, financing, and mortgages. For those students interested in a commercial or residential real estate practice, Modern Real Estate is a must. The permitting side of a real estate practice involves the representation of clients before local, state, or federal agencies. Land Use Law, Environmental Law, and Administrative Law will teach students constitutional principles, statutory tools, and the fundamentals of agency practice. Students should also consider a clinic in one of New England Law’s outstanding placements. Finally, for those interested in litigation, Trial Practice will provide an advantage in courtroom strategy.

Land Use Law covers the basics of subdivision control, zoning, and other land use devices. The basic land use course teaches practical skills, constitutional principles, and statutory interpretation. These skills are useful for a career in government lawyering (perhaps as a town counsel or city solicitor), the representation of developers and other landowners, or the representation of abutters. In addition, the Local Government Law course and a course in Alternative Dispute Resolution would be helpful to a student who intends to practice in this area.
